Innovate Rotary The President’s Diary was largely inspired by Innovate Rotary which is written by Greg Krauska.
His insights on how to create a thriving, growing and high impact Rotary club, despite some cultural differences, are both informative and challenging. I would suggest that Rotarians who are serious about developing their clubs should find the time to read Innovate Rotary. Inspired by Greg and with over twenty years of voluntary sector management experience, I continually find myself thinking about how Rotary compares to the not-for-profit organisations I have known and worked with. Today Rotary boasts nearly 34,000 clubs and over 1.22 million members worldwide. With over a one hundred years of service, it can be argued that no other organisation has done more to combat such pressing issues as poverty, hunger, illiteracy, disease, child protection and the environment. So why do so few people know what Rotary is and does. Perhaps more worryingly, why do so few people want to join? Throughout the UK, the mantra is of the need to increase membership. What you hear much less of, particularly at club level is “what are we going to do to increase our membership? What are we going to change to make us more attractive?” Change is difficult for all of us and most people only really consider change a good thing if they are suggesting it. However, I believe the issue of change should be at the heart of the membership/future of Rotary debates. Change and adaption should be the guiding principle for all clubs. I should stress, I do not advocate ‘change for change sake’, but to remain relevant and attract those all important new members, degrees of change has to be part of the development strategy.
